Second Public Hearing on COC Trustee Area Districts At the second Public Hearing on COC Trustee Area Districts, several community members addressed the Board of Trustees with questions and comments on the proposed Trustee Area District maps. First public hearing on voting areas draws 20-25 people What’s the best way to carve up the Santa Clarita Valley’s sprawling canyons, winding roads, suburban communities and wide-spread population? That’s the challenge facing the Santa Clarita Community College District, which has released three possible plans to divide its borders into five different voting areas as part of the district’s move to a new election system. Until now, voters have had a say in electing all of the five board members who oversee the community college district, which covers both campuses of College of the Canyons. Santa Clarita Community College District Hosts First Public Hearing On Proposed Trustee-Area Maps

The first of three public hearings for the proposed trustee areas was held by the Board of Trustees of the Santa Clarita Community College District Tuesday night. The hearing’s purpose was to receive public input and testimony regarding the proposed trustee area maps. The district is changing its election system from “at-large” voting to “by-trustee area” voting in response to a lawsuit under the California Voting Rights Act. Public hearings scheduled to discuss COC trustee election boundaries

The first of three public hearings being held by the Board of Trustees of the Santa Clarita Community College District to receive public input and testimony regarding proposed trustee areas is scheduled for Tuesday evening. At its September 23 meeting, the board determined, pursuant to Education Code §72036, to change its method of election from “at-large” voting to “by-trustee area” voting, in which members of the board are elected by the voters of the trustee area in which they reside. Santa Clarita Community College District, COC To Host Trustee-Area Map Public Hearings

At its September 23 meeting, the board determined, pursuant to Education Code §72036, to change its method of election from “at-large” voting to “by-trustee area” voting, in which members of the board are elected by the voters of the trustee area in which they reside. At Tuesday’s hearing, the board will consider plans prepared by the District’s demographic consultant that are based on the 2010 Census and criteria approved by the board.  The hearing is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. in Hasley Hall 137 on the Valencia Campus. By-area Election System Adopted By Santa Clarita Community College District

The Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees adopted two resolutions Wednesday to initiate the process of a “by-area” election system as well as the criteria of how these areas will be determined. A by-area election system is where a district is divided into trustee areas and one governing board member is elected by eligible voters of that particular area. COC signs off on move to voting-area elections

The Santa Clarita Community College District has joined the growing ranks of Santa Clarita Valley school districts to move to voting-area elections after board members voted Wednesday to approve the switch. Superior Court Judge Rules Against Cumulative Voting In Santa Clarita City Lawsuit

Judge Terry A. Green ruled in July 2014 that cumulative voting could be used by the city of Santa Clarita. Plaintiffs Jim Soliz and Rosemaire Sanchez-Fraser sued the city of Santa Clarita, the Santa Clarita Community College District and the Sulphur Springs School District in June 2013 for an alleged California Voting Rights Act violation. The lawsuits claim Hispanic voters’ rights are being violated by at-large elections, which result in racially polarized voting and deny Hispanic voters the opportunity to select their candidate of choice.
