College of the Canyons officials are readying for their first November election in a three-person battle for the the second district seat held by board member Bruce Fortine. Fortine, the incumbent and a founding board member for the 47-year-old community college. Fortine is running against challengers Edel Alonso and Ronda Baldwin-Kennedy. COC faculty members receive 5 percent raise

Full-time faculty members at College of the Canyons will receive a 5 percent salary increase after a new collective bargaining agreement was approved Wednesday by the Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees. COC faculty union to discuss endorsements By Matt Thacker Signal Staff Writer April 9, 2016 8:00 a.m. The College of the Canyons Faculty Association will explain its endorsement process to prospective Board of Trustees candidates during Wednesday’s Santa Clarita Community College District Board of Trustees meeting. Chris Blakey, president of the union’s political action committee, said the Faculty Association will determine whether to endorse any candidates in August and September. Santa Clarita Community College District Approves Trustee Area Map

The Santa Clarita Community College District held its third public meeting at Newhall Elementary School on Wednesday to approve one of six maps for dividing the district into five trustee areas. The maps were proposed by the National Demographics Corporation and were presented by NDC President, Douglas Johnson, at the board’s first public meeting on Oct. 13 at College of the Canyons. Under the new “by-trustee area” voting system, members of the board are elected by the voters of the trustee area in which they reside. Click here to read more...

College of the Canyons Board of Trustees approve Trustee district maps

The College of the Canyons Board of Trustees have approved the map that will be adopted in dividing the Santa Clarita Community College District from an at large voting district to trustee area districts for elections. The Board of Trustees decided on Map A from a selection of six maps presented by the National Demographics Corporation. The approved map will split the the Santa Clarita Community College District, or SCCCD, into five separate trustee area districts. COC Scholarly Presentation to explore Galápagos Islands & Darwin’s footsteps

College of the Canyons biology professor Dr. Miriam Golbert will deliver the Scholarly Presentation “Galápagos: A Personal Journey on Darwin's Footsteps” at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center (PAC) on Thursday, Nov. 19. The presentation, which is based on Golbert’s research in the Galápagos Islands, will cover topics ranging from where the islands are located and their unique geological formations, before discussing Charles Darwin’s time spent on the islands, along with his various discoveries and scientific theories. Saugus district, COC elections will be added to county ballot

Los Angeles County supervisors voted Tuesday to add school board races for College of the Canyons and the Saugus Union School District to the statewide general election ballot, starting in November 2016. The decision means three Santa Clarita Valley races will be on the statewide general election ballot in 2016. Members of the county Board of Supervisors voted earlier this year to add the Santa Clarita City Council election to that ballot. Click here to read more...
